A coalition of environmental and social justice groups today rolled out their standards for addressing climate change, putting a focus on frontline communities that have long borne the brunt of pollution.
The Equitable and Just National Climate Platform brings together more than 70 organizations, from major environmental groups like the Sierra Club to smaller grassroots organizations focused on environmental justice.
The platform represents a significant shift in how the environmental movement approaches climate policy, putting equity and justice at the center of the agenda rather than treating them as afterthoughts.
“We need to address greenhouse-gas emissions,” said Cecilia Martinez, a professor who helped lead the effort. “But we cannot do that divorced and disconnected from the other types of legacy pollution that have been harming our communities.”
